Matmos @ The Music Gallery

I had the great opportunity to see Matmos playing live at the Music Gallery earlier on this week. This was not the first time that I've seen them live but it was yet again a really great concert. I don't actually have the new album Supreme Balloon and I had not made any attempt to know any of the songs that I was going to see live. Which is just as well because I feel it was more engaging that way.

My favorite part of the concert was when they played a song called Public Sex for Boyd McDonald from the album The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast. Accompanying the song was a old VHS tape projected on the screen behind them. The video itself is just some softcore porn film of a guy in a hot tub in the backyard. Martin Schmidt described it as "beautiful" and a film that they had randomly come across (I later found out that they've actually done the soundtracks for a lot of gay porn in their career so maybe that's how they came across it).

The song did not actually sound like it does on the album. It was this twangy guitar with really sleezy feel to it. Accompanying the song was the video being played on the VHS tape that is all scratched up. Stopping and skipping at random places and other scenes that play all distorted. It was all titillation.

I don't quite know how to describe it. I've been thinking about it since then.

I found that video on the interwobs from a live concert. I've linked it below.
